Hey folks,

I recently finished the British light fighter line and I'm trying to decide which tree to work on next.  I'm curious if anybody can give me their thoughts on the Hornet.  I've been finding the Mosquito a bit of a grind lately so before I really go at it, I'm very interested in how the Hornet's gameplay feels.

Can anybody compare it to other fighter in its tier for me or perhaps to how it is better/worse than the Mosquito?

Thanks a bunch!

The main drawback of the Hornet is it' large size. You are easy for people with bad aim to hit and people with good aim will just rip you to shreds if they have the chance. I really enjoyed the Mosquito so if you didn't like that one the Hornet is not gonna be your cup of tea.

I used to like the Mosquito, but lately I've just sucked in it.  I think I've forgotten how to play it!

Do you find that the Hornet is better at altitude/boom and zoom?

The stock Hornet suffers from poor climb performance compared with the 109Z.  You really need the top engines to be competitive because speed is really your only defense.  I found it's armament to be rather lackluster compared with other aircraft of the same tier, and this affliction seems to get worse the higher up the Brit heavy line you go.

I am certainly no fan of my Hornet, that is for sure. It lacks maneuverability at high altitudes. A 109Z can out turn it at 9K feet. 51s own it. I have been tinkering with the idea of just overburdening it with rockets and bombs for use as a ground pounder to get through it...

I haven't played it with the top engines yet so I'm missing about 60kph from it's final configuration so I can't pass a thorough determination on it yet.

With that being said there are a lot of planes at T7 that can get up to where it operates. On paper a fully upgraded Hornet is really good. In reality though it's altitude performance isn't a significant increase over what the Mosquito can do. The primary detriment the Hornet has over the Mosquito is that it has to contend with T7 and T6 high altitude aircraft because they can compete at high altitudes with it. That coupled with the fact it's a huge target is a major negative. In comparison to the Mosquito it only has to deal with T6 high altitude craft because most T5 it can significantly out play in the vertical save a stripped down 109E or a 110E.

In short the increase in performance isn't enough to off set the competition from the same tier and lower. At this point I'd classify it as an above average plane in its tier because it is nothing special albeit it can still compete high. I've yet to play it with the top engines but an extra 60kph isn't going to make the plane any smaller which is it's largest(no pun intended) drawback.

A Hornet with ADEN cannons?  Now that I would like to see! :great:

I free xp'd past the P228 because it was such a disappointment despite the warnings I'd read about how bad it is.  The Javelin has reasonable firepower (better than HG III on paper but the guns being housed in the wings lessens their effectiveness), it's poor maneuverability means you need to open fire at suboptimal (i.e. max) ranges or your target can easily evade you. Brit heavies are at their best when their target is unaware they have a heavy closing on them, but flying a plane the size of the Javelin and P228 makes sneaking up difficult despite their excellent speed and acceleration.

I meant by the line of 'this affliction seems to get worse the higher up the Brit heavy line you go'.

...and P.228 do get ADEN cannons, so I don't understand why, that's all.

When I re read your post I understood your point.  I didn't upgrade the P228 because I couldn't sell it fast enough.  Maybe it isn't too bad with the upgraded ADENs but I never bothered to find out.  It is certainly very undergunned with the Hispano's.

J7W2 with the Type 99-2 will be the reward of those who skipped the Type 5 cannons. Can't imagine one in that state, really.

...at least Swift uses cowling ADEN which is shared with the P. 228, IF you are that patient to grind all those hundred of thousands for just one gun...
