Currently, 303's for the Spit i, and cannon for the Spit V. Seems to work for me.

I use the cannons on all of them, the turning isn't badly effective, plus I like the punch you get from them and being able to blow a plane out of the sky quickly.

Finally got the Spitfire IX. The biggest thing I've noticed is that it climbs a lot better, and is finally on par with tier VI light fighters, which is sad that it has to be a whole tier higher in order to compete.. This of course is in the base configuration. I only got one mission in it before work this morning, but it does not seem to be to hard to get used to. It fly like the Spitfire I, and the Spitfire V. Seems to be a bit faster as well. The cannons seemed to hit a bit harder. I'm not fully sure what it can do, because of some lag I was having, but I'll check it on out.

I've run both set ups, I know when I first got the spitfire 1 I was banging my head against a wall till I got the 20mm. But as I learned the plane, and went to the V, I decided to try the 8 guns out and rather liked them. Once you figure out it's strengths and weakness's, weapons are really a matter of opinion.

20mm can easily destroy modules, meaning a good burst can down a zero easy, but the 20mm over heat fairly quick.

The 8 .303's have less direct punch, but I believe the DPS is actually slightly higher, as well as leaving you faster and more mobile.

As I'm typing this can't bring up exact numbers, but with the 8 guns, speed with top tier engine can certainly give the German and American branches a run for their money, and still out turn them. But the trick is definitely wait till your in a closer range then when the aim circle shows up. That and a nice steady aim can actually really eat up an enemy planes health.

I find the British line from tier 3 on is really knowing how to fight with your plane vs what ever one your against. It fits multiple play styles against particular aircraft. Turn and burn 109's, but boom and zoom vs a zero. I recommend clicking opponents names so you see just how they perform against your plane in attributes and take notes so you eventually learn how to beat what plane in it.

I really like the mark IX.  You still gotta watch those 262's need to swoop, duck, and weave till they fly past.

I mean, I had fast motor cars and fast motor bikes, and when I wasn't crashing airplanes, I was crashing motor bikes. It's all part of the game.

I've had a Spitfire 1 for a few months now and only use the 20mms on it. I find that the 8 303 brownings don't have the reach or punch in looking for, they also limit the plane to be played like an american p-40 minus the great boom and zoom ability. I don't find the 20mms hurt me manueverability wise as much as you'd think, yes a spit with the 303s equiped can out turn me but I find the if you do loops, and if the enemy can turn better than you most people can't stay on target during the loop and you don't take much damage. I might be inclined to use the 303 brownings if they had a higher rate to damage enemy pilot with canopy shots, there's a reason 303 is a war crime to use and they don't make ammo for it anymore really (hard to get it for my Gerrand M1). 303 browning is boattail amunition, when it hits soft tissue (pilot) it tumbles at over the speed of sound creating a shockwave within the body liquifying muscle and internal organs, hence why it should have an increased rate to damae pilots. To summerize, I prefer the 20mms, reach and damage is better, just use short bursts while ur far out and open full auto when ur within like 400 meters.
