Can someone break down the differences between the Russian fighter lines?  It looks like you get firepower with the LaGG/LA lines vs speed and agility with the Yak line?  In some cases, the Yak fighters seem to have all the advantages beyond firepower though.  Do the LaGG's fly like the American planes and hold speed well?  Thanks.

Yak-1 line: Full mobility mode, bad firepower and HP.

Yak-7 line: High damage per shot firepower (though the cannon heats up stupid fast), not as agile as the Yak-1 line and still has rather bad HP.

Lavochkin line: Decent mobility (still on-par or superior with British fighters), strong concentrated firepower with high RPM (think of chainsaw style weapons), superior energy retention. Also a decent HP pool.

That should cover it. May change with jets, but I'm very sure that's how it goes.

Adding on to what Heh said, the Lavochkin and the Yak-7 line are quite similar. What differentiates them, IMO, is that the Lavochkin line is more for sustained combat while the Yak-7 line heavily relies on crits to win fights. The longer a fight drags on, the lower the chances are a Yak is getting out of it unscathed.

Yak-1/3: screw firepower, we have the mobility

Yak-7/9: screw mobility, we have anti tank gun

Lavochkins: screw Yaks, we can climb.

i mean its energy conservation is really bad on turnfighting

it lost its energy really fast in an extensive turn..

still a great plane for turnfighting anyway

btw grinding sux? La-5 in stock condition is already good IMHO..

I agree that it starts are pretty decent and improves from there. I never made the Yak, so I don't know anything about that line, I still have I16-l, great little fighter so I just followed that line. I do see a lot of Yak fighters though.

LaGG-3 for me, mediocore tier 7 Yak-9U's guns setup for tier 5 is hillarious..

Do you want to knock out Japanese planes with one good hit? LaGG-3.

Do you want to out turn everything out there except for the Japanese? Yak-1.
Do you want to be able to climb a bit? LaGG-3.

Do you want to retain your performance while you're hugging the ground for cover? Yak-1.

^ This.  I've flown both and (at least for me) enjoy the Yak-1 more. It's firepower might suck, but I always tend to get into more circle dogfights than I ever have a chance to BnZ. The Yak-1 can continue turning on someone and, as long as you are accurate, the guns will do their job. Might take a little longer, but you can keep up with most Zero's, if you use boost and watch your turn angles.

Oh and for an edit. The Yak-7 is ridiculous for Tier5. That 37mm is nuts at taking out enemies....It's the Tier 5 I chose to keep out of the Yak-1, LaGG-3, and Yak-7.

I'm finding it difficult to say nice things about the LaGG as it received a bit of love in a recent patch after I sold it.  Basically the only thing it excels at is a head on pass.  People dumb enough to try to ram you head on will eat a 37mm round long before they hit you.  When I had it it couldn't climb, had a nice instantaneous but poor sustained turn rate.  It wasn't fast enough (had short boost and accelerated fairly poorly) and had low health so was at the mercy of BnZ.  The Yak 7 was barely adequate as a TnB fighter as the big gun in its nose deteriorated the pitch rate to the point German fighters could out turn it, the only one that seemed to work well as a total package was the Yak-1 (the 1M is even better).  The best 37mm equipped fighter in Tier 5 is the XFL-1 imo.
