Grumman F6F Hellcat....and I wont even bother trying to defend my decision. The plane's record speaks for itself.

Have to agree! Was a beast and destroyed more enemy aircraft than any other plane in the pacific.

Some really great planes mentioned in this thread. For some odd reason I totally fogot about the F6F. A great plane for it's theatre, and champion Kamikaze destroyer. I am not too sure how it would have faired in Europe, as the air war was very different between the two primary theatres. I also seen the Tempest mentioned. The Tempest had it's issues, mostly engine fumes leaking into the cockpit and knocking the pilot out. However, once they figured that issue out, it was one of the fastest piston planes of the war. The God awful big raidator made it vulnerable to ground fire. I still stand by my original chice of the "Jug". It could do a variety of things very well, it held the line against the Luftwaffe until the longer range fighters were in service, and it's pilots faced the more expierenced Luftwaffe veterans that were mostly killed off by the time the Mustang arrived.

I'm going to have to go with the p38. To much raw power and destruction there to ignore. Never mind that it is one of the only fighter of ww2 to truely  excel in both major theaters of combat. It made a name for itself shredding zero's AND protecting the daylight bombing campaign at high altitude.

P51D was a superebe machine that was the best pistion engince (Rolls Royce Merlin) fighter of all time.

Pratt & Whitney R2800. Merlin would just stall mid flight (An Ace of the Eighth). R2800 could have a cylinder knocked out and still take the plane and pilot home.

The Zero. At its moment, in its time, nothing could touch it. Only the industrial might of the USA, which eventually produced planes of a totally new era, could stop it. The Zero was a samurai, the US planes were riflemen. Wulf

And just like a samurai, the Zero would rather kill itself in battle rather than face the shame of defeat.

I think the Hawker Tempest would be a good contender for best plane of WW2. Excelled at everything.

I know, it's like I'm in love with the thing. If she didn't want to choke me and wasn't just a bit worse than a 109 at turning, I would marry her.

Bearcat. Basically if someone smashed a 47 and a 51 together and added arrestor gear. Then multiplied the awesome by ten. Either that or the He290 just for cool tankbustin' pwnage.

If you see a Panzer flying a 109, you are probably already dead.-Me.

No, that's wrong. Basically it's "HEY GUISE LET'S MAKE OUR HUGE RADIAL ENGINE FIT IN THE SMALLEST AND LIGHTEST AIRFRAME POSSIBLE". This is how the Bearcat was made.

And add the most OP group of quad 20mm cannon. Instant tier nine.

When you find yourself in an F-86 fighting an F-22, you'll realize that your plane is also important.

That I can agree with, even though it takes less effort for the guy in the superior plane.
