Giuseppe Gabrielli (26 February 1903 - 29 November 1987) was an Italian aeronautics engineer. He is famous as designer of numerous Italian military aircraft, including the FIAT G.50 and G.55 World War II fighters and also G.80, G.91, G.222. (FIAT G.XX standing for Fiat Gabrielli)

In December 1942 the possible availability in 1943 of the new DB.603, a more powerful development of the DB.605 offering 1,750 HP against its 1,475, led lhe Air Staff (Stato Maggiore dell'aeronautica) to ask Fiat to consider installing this engine in the G 55. The Engine Section (Fiat Avio) was already studynig the 2100 HP AA-0 engine but, after the humbling experience of the A38, its rapid availability was treated with exteeme caution. Finally, although not excluding the possibility of future use, it was decided not to consider the A40 for use in the G 55 or its derivatives.

The Fiat A.40 was an 24-cylinder X engine with four banks of six cylinders each (at 90°), compatible with a 20 mm cannon or a 12,7 mm machine gun firing through the propeller shaft.

The most highly developed fighter produced in Italy during the war, the sole G.56 prototype was flown in March, 1944 ( first flew on 28 March, 1944), under German authority. A G.55 serie 1 airframe was fitted with the improved DB 603A engine, which produced 1510 h.p. at 5700m. and had a 1750 h.p. take off and emergency rating. This engine was the only major change from G.55 serie 1 specification, yet it increased the length by 19 cm, the weight by 154 kg, and the maximum speed by 64.37 km/h. Retaining the excellent maneuverability that characterized almost all Italian fighter designs, the G.56 possessed sufficient speed and firepower (armament being that of the G.55 serie 1) to match any Allied or German fighter on even terms, actually proving itself superior to the Bf 109K, Bf 109G and Fw 190A in comparative tests. The shortage of engines which limited G.55 production was even more acute with respect to the DB 603 unit, with the result that no production of the G.56 was seriously contemplated.

Like the Messerschmitt Bf 109f, the gun 20 mm MG 151/20 could shoot from the propeller hub, the latter would have to be replaceable with a 30mm gun. The two machine guns on the hood were eliminated, keeping the two guns MG 151/20 in the wings. This configuration made it a more aerodynamic nose with which it has reached a speed of 685 km/h in horizontal flight in the tests of flight, and that earns him the title of fastest piston airplane ever built in Italy, after the Macchi-Castoldi MC72 (October 23, 1934 - 711,462 km/h).

The German equivalent to the G.56 was the Focke-Wulf Fw 190D-9 Dora and Focke-Wulf Ta 152 (Kurt Tank series fighters).

A projected experimental version of the G.55 with a radial engine, the G.57 was to have employed the 1250 h.p. FIAT A.83 R.C.24-52 eiffhteen-cylinder unit designed in 1943. However, no prototype was built due to the superiority of the German engines as well as to the critical stage of the war.

In an attempt to maximise the use of the G.55 production tooling, Fiat conceived the unusual G.58 twin-engined, long range heavy fighter. The key concept was that of using two G.55 fuselages in order to obtain a fast and powerfully armed (six 20 mm and four 12.7 mm guns) fighter with a minimum of design and industrial effort. The basic concept was submitted to the Ministry in April 1943. Design activity would be entrusted to the Aviation Technical
Office/2nd Division, with CANSA of Cameri in charge of production. Windtunnel tests with models began in Iuly 1943,. revealing the need to modify the tailplane, but the design was overtaken by the war events and on 21 September, 1943 Fiat was instructed to suspend all G.58 activity.
