I find the light Yak line to be about on par with the Japanese line, which is not good, IMO.
The heavy Yak line is good for a few laughs with the critical hits from the 37mm or 45mm, but it's hard to carry in them I think. I'll echo the that I think they can't carry like a heavy, carrier BF or even P51 in the right hands. No armor and non-existent climb rates mean you need good odds to survive, or an enemy that's dumb enough to turn with you at low altitude. If you take any hits, they're going to hurt.

The light Yak's gun systems are still miles better than the junk that is the Type 99-2.

They definitely shortened the Yak-9u's leash in 5.3.2, it's optimal altitude has been reduced by 1000 ft. Now the band tops out at 4000 feet, 5k if you really want to push it, but at that point there's no way but down once you start maneuvering. I loved this plane, but now I can't figure out what you're supposed to do with it besides beg for scraps below a fur ball where anyone can drop in and ruin your day.

I agree completely. They really ruined the 9U. I thought these planes were supposed to at least loosely resemble their real life counterparts. The real 9u had a ceiling of 10000m. The in game plane starts to suffer heavily after 2000m. I know it's all in balance but this is seriously exaggerated. The devs screwed up.

I'll veer off a bit here, but I've finished the A7M's final stretch and earned myself a J7W1 over the weekend - they got a very limited flight ceiling too (those flying the Yak should know, they are about the same).
...at least the T7 Yaks gained gunsight upgrade (At least, my Yak-3 gets the 450k gunsight). I think I'll just free EXP the Yak jet and be done with it soon...

What's really annoying about the heavy Yaks is that none of the cannons transfer over, even from the Yak 9 to 9U despite the fact that they are basicly the same plane. So what ends up happening is that you spend time and exp to unlock the cannons to make the plane perform better to unlock the next plane, only to have to do it again for each tier.

9U is a fail.. but the 9 isnt..
i prefered 2x .50 instead of 2x 20mm on 9U anyway, more engine power.. (actually no difference, since the engine is powered by a banana afterall)

Bought the Yak-15...it's truly is a fail. Why would the pilot need a mask when his plane is confined to around 1600 meters and 2000 at max *above sea level*?
Very light armament only make things worse.

...in a hypothetical situation where you make everything above 2km above sea level vacuum, forcing anything in that range down, and eat them in their disadvantage?
Even the J7W1 has 4x 20mm that are actually usable...J7W1 can even beat wing-mounted planes in a frontal approach...

Yes, but the Arrowhead (as I like to call it) can flip around and shoot if they are fast enough. But even with the speed bleeding of the Japanese fighters, the Russians are even worse. I have stalled in both my La-5 and my Yak-9 (37mm mounted) in a horizontal turn fight. If your nose so much as makes an angle towards the sky you lose whatever little speed you have and stall out (even with emergency boost). So combine that with some of the worst engines in the game and I am wondering what the Russians can offer that the Japanese doesn't already provide.
tips for horizontal fight: do a little immelman, so you got little more energy.

Warning: Me 209 A1 with MK 103 plays like a heavy Yak of high altitude...though the MK 103 seems to be easier to use than Russian derp cannons for some reason.

The Yak-15's armament is so underwhelming it always gets its kills stolen.

loved the 100m altitude buff on 9U..
btw those prop yaks got a secret engine buff on 5.3.3.

You know what the Yak-15 reminds me of?
...and Yak-3 gets a whole 1 second increase in boosting time..,.

You are right Pyan, it is a tough plane to fly. I am hoping WG will come around and say jets are jets and need to act like them.

not as bad as i thought, still way better than '9U without its NS-45M..

I got the KMU gun...I'll say that go for the engine first, as the stock NS-23 is plenty good.
