Good work on your skins too guys.

Skin requests should be sent to my inbox (PM), also, reference pictures or at least a general idea of what you want is always nice. I can't promise I'll have it done too soon, as it usually takes me all day to do a skin depending on the plane.

I'm having an... interesting problem. I've doodled on the I-16 (late)'s hangar.dds to see what goes where, and after repacking nothing changes. The skin remains steadfastly standard, I'm not even breaking the game which is what I'd expect to have happen if I was doing something wrong. It's almost like it's not bothering to overwrite the file.
Here's what I've done:
  • unpacked all the nations textures into their own respective folders using 7zip
  • copied said folders so I can overwrite any mistakes I make
  • edited the SU06_I16_24_hangar.dds file (basically just scribbled over the wings as a test) in both photoshop and paint.net
  • dragged the edited file into the packages vehicle_airplanes_russian/blahblahblah
  • Closed all WoWP related folders
  • Started WoWP
  • rinse and repeat about ten times, minus the first two steps.
I'm too tired to keep at this tonight, I will try again in the morning but hopefully somebody will be able to point out what I'm doing wrong.

I'm on win7 home premium, using Photoshop CS4, and keep getting an error stating "Could not complete request because it is not the right kind of document."

I did install the dds plugin from the nvidia link (trying another one as I type this)

I'm wondering if there is a difference between the stand alone PS and the master suite PS? I have the CS4 Master Suite.

ninja edit: apparently if running a 64bit OS, you need the 64bit version of the plugin, even when using the 32bit version of photoshop. go figure. XD

I have Win7 Ultimate 64bit and struggled with this until Alex gave me a link for WinRar 3.51 which finally allowed me to create a few new skins. Yay and thanks Alex. If risque cartoons are frowned upon where you are employed then NSFW.

I had a thought on skinning... If we do get an exclusive (beta tester only) premium plane at launch, you could reskin all the paint variations for that plane to some bright neon color to spot them from afar. Then anytime you saw one of those planes in battle you'd know you have an experienced adversary perhaps before you could lock on and verify the plane model. :izmena:

Wish I could figure out what I am doing wrong. I started with some invation stripes on my P-51 but I am getting the gray model after I mod the file.
I followed the guide to a tee.
I have Windows 7 Ulitmate 64, Photoshop 64 bit, dds 64 bit plugin and WinRar.
The process is simple enough to follow but I can't figure out what I am missing.

Make sure you are using WinRar 3.51 - newer versions don't seem to work right but won't give you errors.

WinRar 3.51 did it. Successfully imported a test skin in and it worked.

I personally don't use WinRar as I have had too many problems with it in the past, instead I use Total Commander to import files into WoWP.

We could use a place to put up links to the repaints we have done if we choose to share them as the threads seem to get buried pretty fast in the forums.

i love you THIS JUST FIXED THE PROBLEM
i was using win 7 ultimate 64 bit with 7zip and i was suffering the "re-pack" problem that make my skin invisible (i was with just empty grey basic thing)

i want to let you know that i can confirm that  Winrar 3.51 can properly repackage the .pkg file for WoWp 0.4.3.2

i downloaded the Winrar 3.51 from the website were i search for old versions of programs "oldversion com" im using that one and works.

this just remember me to make backups before trying to mod a skin :P ¡¡¡REMEMBER TO Allways DO BACKUPS!!!!

BTW im trying to skin the F4U corsair like the paintjobs my country (Argentina) used on those.

"The Black and White snowy TV look"

The DDS image format is MUCH MUCH more than a simple bitmap, jpeg, gif or png.  You can specific 4, 8, 16, 24, 32, 48, 64 and 128-bit.  With (argb) or without (rgb) alpha channels, and on and on...I don't know the exact number but I'll bet there's easily 20-30 different bpp settings not to mention sharpening, focus, previews etc.

Its quite possible that if some of you are getting the 'all-gray speckly black and white tv' look - you're might be saving your DDS with almost no color information...hence black and white (or more accurately, 16 shades of black-to-white.

I wish I could tell you exactly what settings WOWP was looking for but for now I cannot. I'll be experimenting with a number of them and hopefully I can edit this post with more specifics.

*EDIT*
I'm not talking about editing the base color DDS...i'm talking about editing the detail and bump-map DDS's - just by the way :)

-LK

Thank you all!  It was an endeavor but I couldn't have done it without all your posts...
Hopefully I will figure out how to actually paint the plane.
